Inspiration: My Fears or My Chains

In creating this blog I am taking a leap of faith.  Not because of the stuff I am “putting out there,” but because staying true to what I am writing requires me to put aside notions of stability and a traditional career.  I want to travel and write and not have anything holding me back.  My entry in the Afar magazine blog contest focuses on this but it is worth mentioning again, here.  It is frightening to throw away all of society’s notions and take a “leap of faith.” One place I find inspiration outside of the mountains is other people’s words.  Below is an excerpt from a book called Return to Love written by contemporary author Marianne Williamson.  It is often incorrectly attributed to Nelson Mandela‘s 1994 inaugural address (probably because it is so powerful).  You can also see a well-made video featuring the excerpt here:

Let me know what you think… Is my leap of faith going to pan out? Do you feel inspired to step out-of-bounds?

Our Greatest Fear by Marianne Williamson

It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
